How to Unwind as a Single Mom

Being a working single mom, being a single mom in college, or being a single mom period is a lot of work. At times it's thankless. With all the effort we put into being the best mothers we can be, we deserve a break, but with everything we have going on sometimes its hard to take a pause. Here are some of the ways I like to take a pause and unwind:

1. Have a girls night

Before my birthday I was working 60 hours week for a month, and I was burnt out. I decided to ask my mother to take my daughter for just one night so I could have a girls night with some friends I hadn't seen in a few months. I picked up some pizza and we had a small paint and sip. It was so nice to be out of mom mode and with some friends and it's definitely something I want to do again when I have the chance.

2. Put the babies to bed early, sip some wine and watch your favorite show

This is something I do every once in a while when I can get my daughter to bed early. Even if I just skip the wine and put on my favorite tv show (which right now is Monk lol) and I make some popcorn I get to relax for 30 minutes before I head to bed.

3. Get a baby sitter and go out

I rarely ever go out, but something my friends and I do every once in a while (pre-COVID of course) is just go out, have a drink, dance a little and go home. Even if you aren't going to a bar or a club, it's nice to go out to dinner or just out to a friends house without worrying about when you have to be home. Of course bars and clubs aren't exactly COVID friendly but in case things change or you're the going out type, it'll be relevant in the future.

4. Do some yoga/exercise

Often, after I get my daughter to bed, even when it's a little late and I know I should go to bed right after her, I like to put on her nightlight with ocean waves and light blue lights and meditate, exercise, or do some yoga. It helps me clear my mind so I can stop thinking about work before I get to bed. It also gives me a sense of accomplishment and some time to listen to music or a watch some of a movie before bed.

5. Stay up late watching your favorite movie or reading your favorite book

I do this a lot now because it's the easiest way for me to unwind without wasting too much time and it doesn't take too much brain power lol. On Friday nights, I like to treat myself to some Brownie Brittle or a waffle with some almond butter and just sit and watch Love After Lockup or a move I haven't yet seen before. Sometimes I work while I watch TV sometimes I don't but it's one of the easiest ways for me to wind down after a long week.

6. Take a nap in the middle of the day

There was a point in time when I was working and in college taking 6 classes while raising my daughter and I'd started falling asleep at the wheel almost every other day. I was exhausted, and times where I could barely keep my eyes open and I knew it would be too dangerous for me to drive, sometimes I would just park in a public safe place and take a 10-15 minute nap. It wasn't much, but I felt immensely better and I was rested enough to start driving and continue on with my day.

7. Take a late night drive

Life can get too much and at times and when I lived at home with my mom and Wegmans was open 24 hours, I used to just get dressed and take a late night drive around town or to Wegmans just to treat myself to a late night snack. Possibly a meal depending how the night was going :)

Regardless of the way you choose to wind down, make sure you take some time to treat yourself for all the hard work you're putting in, working, being in college and taking care of a child is not easy, and you deserve a break.
